The Super Bowl-champion Eagles’ visit to the White House next Tuesday won’t be a complete, definitive referendum on how the NFL and its players will react to president Donald Trump’s latest public insult. But it will be the biggest barometer so far, and it will add more to the blueprint of current athlete activism.
Then came Trump’s remarks the morning after the NFL’s new anthem policy was announced last Wednesday: You have to stand proudly for the national anthem or you shouldn’t be playing. You shouldn’t be there. Maybe you shouldn’t be in the country.

Previous reports suggested Wentz should be ready for the season opener, although he likely won’t be 100 percent. According to Dr. David Chao, who pens the Pro Football Doc column for the San Diego Union-Tribune, recovery from the torn lateral collateral ligament makes rehab more difficult and may limit Wentz’s mobility when he first returns.
As Chao noted in late January: At this point, it is still reasonable to hope Wentz can be ready by Week 1. If that happens, he will almost certainly be limited to being a pocket quarterback.
That sort of approach would take an adjustment for Wentz, who is a fearless scrambler (his injury occurred as he dove for the end zone on a scramble against the Rams). But Wentz told Good Morning Football he’s not going to change his approach to the game.
